Chicken, and broccoli and chocolate, OH MY!
I don't know about you, but I LOVE food. Sometimes the thought of lunch is what gets me through my morning at work. Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration, but really guys, I like to eat good, exciting, healthy food. And french fries. Always french fries. That's my guilty pleasure (along with ice cream, of course).
I wanted to share a couple recipes with you today that are perfect for spicing up your summer BBQ's--while getting a wholesome, nutrient filled meal! They're not any more difficult or time consuming than your average meal, but your body will thank you!

Each of these recipes fall under the "keto" diet--but wait! Don't be scared. I know we've all tried our share of fad diets, or made resolutions to cut out certain food groups or parts of our diet. And it's hard. But I am not asking you to change your entire lifestyle or immediately make a big change; I just want to give some tips and recipes to anyone who may be looking to make some healthy recipes this summer!
Side note: You may wonder how the heck recipes relates at all to the Canteen Destiny blog...well, let me tell you my train of thought on this one. At Canteen Destiny, we want to develop the whole person. We focus on leadership, agriculture and arts, and health is vital to each of these things! A part of agriculture is understanding the effect that food has on our bodies, as well as on the economy, etc. Secondly, cooking is truly an art form! It's amazing to think about all the blends of flavours, textures, and colours that God has made available to us, and the creativity we can express with them. Lastly (and you may say this one is a bit of stretch, but, bear with me) to flourish as a leader, it's helpful to be a healthy, energetic individual who can exemplify success in many areas of life.
Finally, before we get to the recipes, I'd just like to share a little bit about what a keto diet looks like. It's pretty cool! If I had a little more self control, I'd gladly go completely that direction. Something for me to work on in my personal life! In a nutshell, a ketogenic diet is one that is high in fat, and low in carbs. Wait, is that what I meant!? YES IT IS. Tell me that doesn't sound appealing. Yes, you may miss bread and pasta and apples, but buy that whipping cream, butter, and go crazy with the cheese! But don't forget the protein. That's important too of course. It's a very sustainable diet, that is great for weight loss, and has been studied as a factor in reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, and others. Disclaimer: I am not an expert, and I'm trying to keep this brief, so do some research for yourself too to see exactly what types of food and in what amounts are the best for you and your body type! There are certain fats that are better than others, and the diet encourages whole foods and minimizing consumption of chemically treated ones.

The simple physiology behind the ketogenic diet is that while eating the types of food it allows for, your body enters a state of ketosis, where it is burning ketone bodies for energy, rather than glucose. Ketones are derived from fat, and are much more stable and steady sources of energy than the glucose taken from carbohydrates. You'll be burning fat for energy, rather than carbs, which is why a ketogenic diet can be so great for weight loss! Couple all these things with a little willpower (and add rules like no eating after a certain time, eating on a good schedule etc.) for amazing results!
Alright! To the actual point of this blog post: the recipes. I hope all the other info was helpful too though! I've picked one meat, one salad, and one dessert to share. They are all compliments of other sites, as I am notorious for cooking sans recipe, thus making my food mostly unrepeatable. See links below!
