Land Based Learning Program

Canteen Destiny is launching a youth-focused agricultural program that develops more farming and environmental awareness. Encouraging people to support a healthy and sustainable environment, this initiative is helping people connect with the environment and understand their impact on it, and has an impact on the lives of 1,500 people in the community.

We are conducting a pilot-project for youth based on a model we researched from California called Land Based Learning and see if it will work in Hamilton. We plan to provide youth from a local high school and youth centre with on-farm experiences through farm tours, field days and workshops.

In accordance with Ontario's local food act, we hope to bring youth from diverse cultural backgrounds together to help increase consumer awareness and education as well as improve access to local food through our initiatives.

Our goals are as follows:

  1. Global awareness: collaboratively working with individuals representing diverse cultures

  2. Health Literacy: Education about healthy food and nutrition and appropriating those choices

  3. Civic Literacy: Understanding the local and global implication of consumer choices

  4. Environmental Literacy:

    1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the environment.

    2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of society’s effect on the natural world.

    3. Investigate and analyze environmental issues.

    4. Take individual and collective action towards addressing environmental challenges.

The project aims to create interest in the agricultural and environmental industry's among the new generation of youth by providing leadership initiatives, discussing opportunities in this field as well as offering solutions to problems that our society is presently facing.
